The date was February 12, 1909.

A diverse group of Americans gathered in New York City for a frank discussion on racial justice, motivated by the horrors of the Springfield Race Riot that occurred one year earlier in Illinois. In doing so, they left an indelible mark on the civil rights movement that is still felt today.

On that day, 105 years ago, they founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Celebrate Founders Day by watching our video honoring the founders of the NAACP, and the path of activism they began all those years ago.
