Senator Noland Announces 2010 College Scholarships Available

Applications are now available for the 2010 Illinois General Assembly Scholarships.  This program allows each member of the Illinois General Assembly to award scholarships to students who have been active in public and civic affairs, demonstrated academic achievement and are in need of scholarship assistance.

The General Assembly Public Affairs Scholarship Program is administered in accordance with the provisions of Section 30-9 of the School Code of Illinois. The Illinois General Assembly Scholarship provides a one-year tuition waiver for the scholarship recipient.

Eight scholarships will be awarded to students accepted to or attending the following schools:
· Chicago State University; Northern Illinois University;
· Eastern Illinois University; Southern Illinois University – Carbondale or Edwardsville;
· Governors State University; University of Illinois – Urbana, Chicago or Springfield;
· Illinois State University; Western Illinois University; and
· Northeastern Illinois University.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. High school student currently applying to or accepted at one of the above universities; or
2. An undergraduate student attending or transferring to one of the above universities; and
3. The student is a resident of the 22nd Legislative District – as required by state guidelines.

Senator Noland has established a Scholarship Committee to review all applications and select scholarship recipients. To receive consideration by the Scholarship Committee, each applicant must:
1. Meet eligibility requirements;
2. Submit a completed application with requested documentation and a one-page essay;
3. Submit their official high school transcripts and, if applicable, official college or university transcripts; and
4. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation.

Scholarships for Veterans' Children

There is a tuition waiver available for children of Veterans living in Illinois. The waiver may be used for any University of Illinois campus. Up to six waivers per Illinois county are awarded each year, one for each of the following conflicts: World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam Conflict, Southeast Asia Conflict, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Applications are now available and the deadline is March 1, 2010.
